Prompt: Choose one of the following four stories: “Sonny’s Blues,” “Super-Frog Saves Tokyo,” “Eight Bites,” or “Where Are You Going? Where Have You Been?.” We’ve discussed that a writer comments, critiques, and illustrates society through his or her characters and stories. So, while drawing upon the psychoanalytic concepts explored in class, choose a story to discuss and analyze the writer’s comment and critique of society as seen through a Freudian Lens. Consider how the ego of the central characters negotiates their relationships to the demands of their environment (including external sources of authority) and of their own inner drives. Be sure to take into account and cite Freud’s views and concepts where appropriate.
